다. 지구가 이와 같이 일시적으로 큰 규모의 급격한 힘에 의하여 alteration(변화) 되었다는 설을 격변설(catastrophism)이라고 한다. 산이나 계곡과 같은 지구 표면의 모습이 돌발적이고 맹렬한 힘에 의해 일시적으로 형성되었으며 그랜드캐년과 같은 큰 계곡도 일련의 큰 지진에 의해 갑자기 생긴 거대한 틈으로 해석하였다.
